One of the five goats arrested by the Osun State Waste Management Agency (OWMA) for the violation of environmental laws, by their owners, has died in custody. The goats were arrested last week and their owners charged with violating article 101, cap II of the laws of Osun State, which states, “No bird or animal shall be allowed to stray to any road or public place or urinate or defecate in any public place in the state.”
This week, the owners and their goats appeared before an Osogbo Magistrate Court and while the owners entered the court, the goats were held in the court premises. The lawyer for the accused pleaded with the court for leniency and promised that his clients would henceforth ensure that they obey the laws of the state.
The court discharged one of the owners whose goat had died in custody of OWMA and ordered the other accused persons to pay N2, 500 fine each to the state government.
